I'm so stunned by Maureen Dowd's, um, remarkable op-ed column in today's New York Times (only available online via Times Select), wherein she discusses Hollywood's fundraising surge for presidential candidate Barack Obama (for whom Dowd has developed a profound hostility, the reasons for which are so obvious that they need not be stated, but would get their stater into a bit of trouble), that I just have to share. In between taunting Obama with his old handle "Barry" and calling him "Obambi" (no, I'm not kidding), she assesses the current buzz in Hollywood with wordplay based around—you'll never guess—the titles of current Oscar contenders! To wit:
Who can pay attention to the Oscar battle between "The Queen" and "Dreamgirls" when you've got a political battle between a Queen and a Dreamboy?
Ooo, good one.
[Hillary is] not exactly Little Miss Sunshine, either...
Oh no she's not!
The babble here is not about "Babel"; it's about the battle of the billionaires.
All that acuity, and alliteration, too! Stop it, Maureen, or I might have to rush to the emergency room and have my sides restitched!
I wonder if I could ever come up with anything as good. Lemme give it a shot.
I'd love to see Maureen Dowd, David Brooks and Thomas Friedman in a remake of "The Departed."
All right! Nailed it!

Glenn,
I used to read the Grey Lady every day, um, back in the mid 90's. I have no idea whatsoever why Maureen Dowdy, er, Dowager, er DowderDuck (ack! It's contagious!) is still employed by them. You'd think with their stock price, they'd be looking for new voices and new angles. Speaking of which Seamus Heaney would be far better at alliteration than what's-her-face. I should go back and finish reading his translation of Beowulf...
Anyway, it was great to see you and Claire over the weekend!
Cheers,
Shaun
