As we're on the subject of Grindhouse, have any reviews pointed out what my pal Joseph Failla just reminded me (useful word, "reminded") of: that Grindhouse's double-feature-in-one-movie conceit is not a new thing at all but was realized, fake trailers and all, in Stanley Donen's 1978 Movie Movie? Like Grindhouse, Movie Movie (no masterpiece but an enjoyable confection) pays tribute to a bygone Hollywood era—its "golden age" rather than its exploitation, um, heyday.
Right now Movie Movie is unavailable in any home video format—but if we're lucky, maybe in a few months we'll see it on DVD with the blurb "The Movie That Inspired Grindhouse!"
