Toronto: 'Lars and the Real Girl'

The eccentric American movie comedy is alive and well and very much in evidence at the Toronto festival. A case in point is Lars and the Real Girl, a movie about a young man from a small and snowy Midwest town who’s in love with a life-size plastic sex doll he names Bianca. Now here’s a film that ought to be distributed on the Christian circuit – despite its ostensibly kinky subject matter, the movie’s sense of decency and tolerance runs surprisingly deep. Lars is directed by Craig Gillespie, whose only other feature credit is Mr. Woodcock (with Billy Bob Thornton and Seann William Scott, opening September 14; Lars on October 12), and the script, which surely must have seemed impossible in print, filled as it is with unfinished sentences and twitches and silent reactions, is by Nancy Oliver, a frequent writer for Six Feet Under. The cast is a bit mannered but never too twee: Ryan Gosling, chubbier and geekier than usual, as Lars, whose delusions and phobias are as stubborn as they are transparent; Paul Schneider, so memorable in David Gordon Green’s All the Real Girls (note the title: coincidence?), as Lars’s guilty older brother, an everyman as normal as Lars is strange; Emily Mortimer, sporting what looks to be a nine-month-old pregnancy, as the irrepressibly empathetic sister-in-law; Patricia Clarkson, as Lars’s family doctor/shrink, a kind of common-sense guru who guides him back to the land of the sane; and Kelli Garner, as Lars’s office co-worker, who blithely competes with Bianca for his heart.
But the real secret to this comedy’s success is the supporting cast of crusty-benign townfolk: the movie’s big joke is that despite Lars’s crazy behavior – he wheels Bianca around in a wheelchair and has conversations with her pretty much everywhere he goes – he is accepted and loved by his community, and bathed in that affection he finds the space to heal his deepest wounds. People address Bianca as if she were real, sit her at meals, dress her in their clothes, do her hair – even find her a job. This vision of it-takes-a-village support may sound fairy-tale sweet, and in fact it is a bit of a pipe dream. But the movie plays so flawlessly from scene to scene it has the force of an allegorical Sunday morning sermon – that is, one that’s not so foolish as to take itself too seriously.
